Dear Ajani,
As I write this letter, I am overwhelmed with pride, gratitude, and a deep sense of awe for the young man you are becoming. Watching you grow—on and off the field—has been one of the greatest joys of my life. I want to share this open letter with you as a reflection of your incredible journey with the Fort Hamilton Tigers and as a tribute to the many lessons you’ve taught me as your parent.
Your high school experience wasn’t what we initially envisioned. When you started, I thought your path would lean more toward your love for music, especially given your years in the school band. Instead, you’ve taken on the challenges and triumphs of football while continuing to excel as a musician. This dual commitment speaks volumes about your character, resilience, and ambition.
The Journey to Fort Hamilton Tigers
Entering Fort Hamilton High School, I had plans for you to immerse yourself fully in the music program. With your talent for playing instruments and reading music—skills you’ve honed since the fourth grade—I saw a bright future where these abilities could open countless doors. You’ve made me so proud by remaining dedicated to music, performing in both the Symphonic Band and the Marching Band under the guidance of Thomas Oberle. The discipline and teamwork you’ve learned through music are invaluable, and I have immense respect for Mr. Oberle and the culture he has fostered within the program.
But life had other plans. During your orientation, a fellow student, Sebastian, approached you. As Fort Hamilton is known for its diversity, I assumed you might have recognized him from somewhere. Instead, he was recruiting you for the football team. I hesitated—football is a physically demanding and dangerous sport—but I realized this was an opportunity for you to make your own choices.
After speaking with Coach Delisi, I felt reassured about your safety and the team environment. We agreed you could join us if you stayed in the music program. Looking back, I am so glad I allowed you to explore this new path. As parents, we must learn to let go and trust that our children can decide for themselves.
The Impact of Football on Your Growth
Ajani, you adapted to football just as quickly as you’ve mastered every other sport. Playing defense on the JV team, you demonstrated a natural talent and an unrelenting drive. Your team’s winning season—the first in six years—was a testament to your hard work and dedication. Moving up to the Varsity team in your second year only confirmed your capabilities. Under the leadership of Coach Daniel Perez, you contributed to the team’s success, including a long-awaited playoff run.
This past season, though bittersweet, was nothing short of remarkable. Ending the 23/24 season with a championship loss was tough, but the journey was incredible. I heard countless stories about your defensive plays, some of which directly led to touchdowns, even if your name wasn’t on the scoreboard. Defense wins games—I’ve come to appreciate this because of you.
A Parent’s Pride
Recently, I came across another article by Jim Dolan in The Brooklyn Reporter, highlighting your performance. This was the third time you were mentioned, and I felt indescribable pride each time. It’s a reminder that success isn’t only about flashy plays or being in the spotlight—it’s about the grit, strategy, and teamwork that often go unnoticed.
Ajani, you are proof that every role on a team matters. Your dedication to defense has taught me that success doesn’t always look like what we expect. Your quiet confidence and ability to make impactful plays speak volumes about your character.
The Bigger Picture: Lessons Learned
Your journey has also taught me important lessons as a parent. Allowing you to make choices has helped you grow into a well-rounded, thoughtful individual. Research shows that parental over control can hinder a child’s ability to develop autonomy and confidence. According to a study published in Child Development, adolescents with supportive, autonomy-granting parents are more likely to develop higher self-esteem and better decision-making skills.
Additionally, your experience with football and music highlights the importance of extracurricular activities in fostering personal growth. A 2019 study in Frontiers in Psychology found that students engaged in sports and music exhibited better time management, discipline, and social skills than their peers. You are living proof of these benefits.
Looking Ahead to the Future
As you approach your senior year, I am excited to see what lies ahead. I know there will be challenges, but you will face them with the same determination and resilience that have carried you this far. I am grateful to the Fort Hamilton Tigers’ coaching staff, your teammates, and the supportive community that has nurtured your growth.
To all the parents reading this, I encourage you to embrace your child’s passions, even when they take unexpected turns. Supporting their interests while providing guidance can lead to incredible outcomes—for both them and you.
Conclusion
Ajani, as you gear up for your final high school football season, know that I am your biggest fan. Whether on the field, in the band room, or life, you continue to amaze me with your talent, hard work, and humility.
Thank you for letting me be part of your journey. I look forward to cheering you on, celebrating your victories, and learning from your setbacks. Whatever the future holds, I know you will continue to make us proud.
With love and admiration,
Mom
